In John 4, Jesus went through Samaria on His way to Galilee. Why? (Jewish people usually travelled around Samaria due to the ongoing idolatry and hostility). The disciples thought Jesus was stopping at Kwik Trip for some water and a sandwich. But, to their surprise, Jesus had a bigger mission in mind. He was going to bring in a huge harvest!

While the disciples went off looking for lunch, Jesus was planting Gospel seeds. His conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well goes deeper and deeper to the bedrock of her need. She is lost and unfulfilled. She needs the "living water" of eternal life. Jesus tells her directly that he is the Messiah! She drops her bucket and runs with excitement. She brings the village out to meet Jesus. Two days later, many believe Jesus is the Messiah and receive eternal life. Their deepest thirst was quenched by the Savior of the World.

Meanwhile the disciples were shocked to see Jesus talking with the woman! Their mission had nothing to do with the woman. All they wanted was to get some water and have Jesus eat lunch. But, Jesus said, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work." John 4:32-34.

Just as Jesus had living water for the Samaritan woman she knew nothing about, Jesus had food for the disciples that they knew nothing about! The food they needed was to learn to do and finish the will of God.

Finishing the will of God is the "food" Christians need as well to satisfy our deepest hungers. That food Jesus talked about is being active in reaching lost people and leading them to salvation.

  • Are you on mission with God?
  • Do you long to see a harvest of people receiving eternal life?
  • What has God called you to do that is unfinished in your life?
  • What has God called Living Rock Church to do that is unfinished in our cooporate life?

There is a powerful promise here. Finishing God's will is the way God feeds our deepest hungers!
